2013 WJC Day 1 Results
The 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship began Wednesday morning in Ufa, Russia, with four games on the schedule:
Canada 9 vs. Germany 3
Former Red Deer Rebel and first overall NHL draft pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and four assists as Player of the Game leading Canada to a 9-3 win over Germany.
Mark Scheifele of the Barrie Colts scored twice, including a short-handed goal, and Jonathan Huberdeau of the Saint John Sea Dogs had a goal and two assists.
Canada’s other scorers were Ty Rattie (Portland Winterhawks), Ryan Strome (Niagara IceDogs), Jonathan Drouin (Halifax Mooseheads), and defencemen Xavier Ouellet (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada) and Tyler Wotherspoon (Portland Winterhawks).
Goaltender Malcolm Subban of the Belleville Bulls stopped 25 of 28 shots for the win.
Canada (1-0) faces Slovakia on Friday, the United States on Sunday and concludes Pool B play New Year’s Eve against host Russia.
Tobias Rieder of the Kitchener Rangers and Nickolas Latta of the Sarnia Sting each scored for Germany.
Dominik Kahun of the Sudbury Wolves picked up an assist along with Leon Draisaitl of the Prince Albert Raiders who was named Player of the Game.
Sweden 4 vs. Czech Republic 1
The defending gold medalists Sweden opened the 2013 World Junior Championship with a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic.
Returning CHL players including Anaheim Ducks prospect Rickard Rakell of the Plymouth Whalers and Carolina Hurricanes prospect Victor Rask of the Calgary Hitmen each picked up an assist in the contest.
Czech captain Lukas Sedlak of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens scored their lone goal.
Matej Machovsky of the Brampton Battalion made 37 saves despite the loss.
Russia 3 vs. Slovakia 2 OT
The host Team Russia scored an overtime victory against Slovakia to open the tournament with SUBWAY Super Series defencemen Albert Yarullin netting the game-winner.
Nikita Kucherov of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies also scored, with Mikhail Grigorenko of the Quebec Remparts picking up an assist.
Former OHL players Alexander Khokhlachev (1G) and Nail Yakupov (1A) each recorded a point in the contest.
Finland 5 vs. Latvia 1
Defenceman Olli Maatta of the London Knights, a first round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Alternate Captain on Team Finland, helped his club open the tournament with a 5-1 win over Latvia.
