2013 WJC Day 5 Results
The 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship continued Sunday with four Preliminary Round games:
Canada 2 vs. United States 1
Team Canada improved to a perfect 3-0 following a close 2-1 victory over the United States who drop to 1-2 at the 2013 World Junior Championship.
Boston Bruins prospect Malcolm Subban (Belleville Bulls) was the Best Player for Canada with 36 saves.
Anaheim Ducks prospect John Gibson (Kitchener Rangers) was just as strong in goal for the Americans and was named Best Player with 30 saves.
Both Canada goals came in the first period from former Red Deer Rebels Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome (Niagara IceDogs).
Jonathan Huberdeau (Saint John Sea Dogs), Mark Scheifele (Barrie Colts), Brett Ritchie (Niagara IceDogs), and Anthony Camara (Barrie Colts) all contributed assists.
Sarnia Sting forward Alex Galchenyuk recorded an assist on the lone Team USA goal.
Finland 5 vs. Switzerland 4 SO
Finland earned two points in the standings with a 5-4 shootout win over Switzerland on Sunday putting both teams tied for third in the Group A standings with five points each heading into the final day of the preliminary round.
Sven Andrighetto (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) and Alessio Bertaggia (Brandon Wheat Kings) each scored for Switzerland.
Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Tanner Richard (Guelph Storm) picked up an assist and has recorded a point in all three games for the Suisse.
Czech Republic 4 vs. Latvia 2
The Czech Republic picked up their second win of the World Junior Championship with a 4-2 win over Latvia on Sunday. The win gives the Czechs six points after three games in Group A, while Latvia finishes the round-robin with four losses.
St. Louis Blues prospect Dmitrij Jaskin (Moncton Wildcats) scored the game-winner for the Czech Republic late in the third period. Detroit Red Wings prospect Martin Frk (Halifax Mooseheads) scored two goals, while former Kingston Frontenac Petr Beranek also contributed a goal.
Petr Sidlik (Victoriaville Tigres) recorded two assists, while captain Lukas Sedlak (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) and Radek Faksa (Kitchener Rangers) each picked up one assist.
Patrik Bartosak (Red Deer Rebels) made 18 saves in the Czech Republic win.
Nikita Jevpalovs (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada) and Roberts Lipsbergs (Seattle Thunderbirds) scored for Latvia, with Edgars Kulda (Edmonton Oil Kings) picking up an assist.
Slovakia 2 vs. Germany 1 OT
Slovakia picked up their first win of the World Junior Championship with a 2-1 overtime win over Germany. Slovakia is tied with the United States with three points each in Group B, while Germany finishes the round-robin in fifth place with one point.
New York Rangers prospect Peter Ceresnak (Peterborough Petes) scored the overtime winner for Slovakia just 1:40 into the extra frame with Martin Reway (Gatineau Olympiques) picking up an assist.
Former Brandon Wheat King Bruno Mraz was named Best Player for Slovakia with one goal.
Edmonton Oilers prospect Tobias Rieder (Kitchener Rangers) scored the lone goal for Germany with Leon Draisaitl (Prince Albert Raiders) and Dominik Kahun (Sudbury Wolves) contributing assists on the goal.
Marvin Cupper (Shawinigan Cataractes) made 40 saves despite the loss.
The Preliminary Round-Robin wraps up Monday with four games on the schedule including Canada vs. Russia, United States vs. Slovakia, Switzerland vs. Czech Republic, and Sweden vs. Finland.
