2013 WJC Day 6 Results
The Preliminary Round-Robin of the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship wrapped up Monday with four games including Canada with a 4-1 win over Russia.
Canada 4 vs. Russia 1
Canada advances directly to the Semi-Finals of the World Junior Championship following a 4-1 win over Russia to finish first in the Group B standings. The loss was Russia’s first of the tournament.
2013 NHL Draft prospect Jonathan Drouin (Halifax Mooseheads) was named Canada’s Best Player with a second period goal.
Dougie Hamilton (Niagara IceDogs), Mark Scheifele (Barrie Colts), and Jonathan Huberdeau (Saint John Sea Dogs) also scored for Canada.
Huberdeau finished with two points, while former Red Deer Rebels Ryan Nugent-Hopkins led the way with three assists.
Nikita Kucherov (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) scored the lone goal for Russia.
Belleville Bulls netminder Malcolm Subban made 21 saves in the victory, while Saskatoon Blades netminder Andrei Makarov stopped 44 shots in the loss.
Czech Republic 4 vs. Switzerland 3 OT
The Czech Republic picked up their third win of the World Junior Championship to finish the round-robin in second place of Group A with eight points following a 4-3 overtime win over Switzerland. The Suisse finish Group A in third place with six points including three OT/SO losses.
Dmitrij Jaskin of the Moncton Wildcats led the way for the Czech Republic with three assists including the set-up of the game-winner. Tomas Hyka (Gatineau Olympiques) scored for the Czech Republic, while Petr Sidlik (Victoriaville Tigres) and Radek Faksa (Kitchener Rangers) each recorded an assist.
Patrik Bartosak (Red Deer Rebels) made 26 saves in the victory.
Marek Hrbas of the Kamloops Blazers was named Best Player for the Czech Republic, while Christian Marti of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada was named Best Player for Switzerland with a goal and an assist.
Sven Andrighetto (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies), Alessio Bertaggia (Brandon Wheat Kings), and Lukas Balmelli (Drummondville Voltigeurs) each picked up an assist for Switzerland.
Sweden 7 vs. Finland 4
Sweden won their fourth straight game with a 7-4 win over Finland and advance to the Semi-Finals of the World Junior Championship as winners of Group A. Finland suffered their second loss and will play in the relegation round after finishing fourth in Group A.
Carolina Hurricanes prospect Victor Rask of the Calgary Hitmen scored once for Sweden.
Anaheim Ducks prospect Rickard Rakell of the Plymouth Whalers recorded two assists.
United States 9 vs. Slovakia 3
The United States secured a berth in the Quarter-Finals of the World Junior Championship following a 9-3 win over Slovakia in Group B action. Slovakia finishes fourth in Group B and will play in the relegation round.
Florida Panthers prospect Vince Trocheck (Saginaw Spirit) scored two goals and one assist for Team USA.
Alex Galchenyuk (Sarnia Sting) and former Plymouth Whaler J.T Miller also had multi-point games with the Montreal Canadiens prospect scoring a goal and an assist, and the New York Rangers prospect picking up two assists.
Connor Murphy (Sarnia Sting), Seth Jones (Portland Winterhawks), Tyler Biggs (Oshawa Generals), and Ryan Hartman (Plymouth Whalers) each recorded one assist in the contest.
Anaheim Ducks prospect John Gibson (Kitchener Rangers) made 26 saves in the victory.
Peter Ceresnak (Peterborough Petes) was named Best Player for Slovakia with one assist.
The 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship continues Wednesday with Quarter-Final action featuring the Czech Republic vs. United States, and Switzerland vs. Russia. Finland will also play Germany in Relegation Round play.
