2013 WJC January 4 Results
The 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship continued on Friday with three games including the fifth place matchup and two relegation round games:
Czech Republic 4 vs. Switzerland 3
The Czech Republic finishes the 2013 World Junior Championship in fifth place following an exciting 4-3 win, defeating Switzerland for the second time in the tournament.
Tomas Hyka (Gatineau Olympiques) led the offense for the Czechs with a goal and two assists.
Dmitrij Jaskin (Moncton Wildcats) and Martin Frk (Halifax Mooseheads) each scored a goal, Petr Sidlik (Victoriaville Tigres), Lukas Sedlak (Chicoutimi Sagueneens), and Tomas Pavelka (PEI Rocket) all recorded an assist.
Jaskin finished the tournament with a team-high six points in six games.
Sven Andrighetto (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) scored twice for the Suisse and finished the tournament with a team-high eight points, while Christian Marti (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada) picked up an assist.
Patrik Bartosak (Red Deer Rebels) made 20 saves in the win and was named Player of the Game.
Finland 11 vs. Slovakia 4
Finland picked up a big 11-4 win over Slovakia to finish the World Junior tournament in seventh place.
Olli Maatta (London Knights) scored a goal and two assists for Finland in the victory.
Former Brandon Wheat King Bruno Mraz scored a goal with two assists for Slovakia despite the loss.
Germany 5 vs. Latvia 2
Germany avoided World Junior relegation winning their final game of the tournament with a 5-2 victory over Latvia.
Tobias Rieder (Kitchener Rangers) scored a goal and two assists and was named Germany’s Player of the Game.
Leon Draisaitl (Prince Albert Raiders) led the way with two goals and two assists and finished the tournament with a team-high six points in six games.
Sebastian Uvira (Oshawa Generals) scored a goal and an assist, while Nikolas Latta (Sarnia Sting) and Dominik Kahun (Sudbury Wolves) each picked up an assist.
Marvin Cupper (Shawinigan Cataractes) made 25 saves in the win.
Rinalds Rosinskis (Prince George Cougars) and Roberts Lipsbergs (Seattle Thunderbirds) each recorded an assist for Latvia.
Winless in the tournament, Latvia will drop to Division I next season while Norway will move up to the Top Division.
The 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship wraps up in Ufa, Russia, on Saturday with two games including the Bronze Medal matchup between Canada and Russia, followed by the Gold Medal game between Sweden and the United States.
