2013 WJC Quarter-Final Results
The 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship continued Wednesday in Ufa, Russia, with two Quarter-Final contests and one relegation round game:
Russia 4 vs. Switzerland 3 SO
The host team Russia will compete for a medal at the World Junior Championship following a 4-3 shootout win over Switzerland.
Russia advances to the Semi-Finals where they will face Sweden, while Switzerland will play the Czech Republic for fifth place after suffering their fourth overtime/shootout loss of the tournament.
Nikita Kucherov (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) was the hero for Russia scoring the shootout winner after tying the game with a power play goal with just 1:39 left to play in regulation. He also added an assist for a three-point game.
Mikhail Grigorenko (Quebec Remparts) was named Best Player for Russia with a goal and an assist, also scoring once in the shootout.
Former Windsor Spitfire Alex Khokhlachev recorded a goal for Russia, while former Sarnia Sting Nail Yakupov picked up an assist.
The teams traded goals in each of the first two periods knotting the score at 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Player of the Game Sven Andrighetto (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) scored a third period goal to give Switzerland the lead before Kucherov’s tying goal.
United States 7 vs. Czech Republic 0
The United States have advanced to the Semi-Finals of the World Junior Championship and will face Canada Thursday following a 7-0 victory over the Czech Republic.
2013 NHL Draft prospect Seth Jones (Portland Winterhawks) tied for the team lead recording four assists.
Former Plymouth Whaler J.T Miller scored a goal and two assists, while current Whaler Ryan Hartman picked up a goal, and Sarnia Sting forward Alex Galchenyuk of the Sarnia Sting recorded one assist.
The United States led 1-0 after 20 minutes before exploding for five goals in the second period, adding a single marker in the third.
John Gibson (Kitchener Rangers) made 31 saves to record the shutout.
Patrik Bartosak (Red Deer Rebels) took the loss stopping 10 of 13 shots before he was relieved by Matej Machovsky (Brampton Battalion) who made 20 saves on 24 shots.
The Czech Republic will face Switzerland on Friday competing for fifth place.
Finland 8 vs. Germany 0
Finland won their first of two relegation round games at the World Junior Championship and will play Slovakia on Friday for placement.
Germany will face Latvia on Friday in a game that will determine who remains in the Top Division for the 2014 tournament in Sweden.
Marvin Cupper of the Shawinigan Cataractes made 48 saves despite the loss.
The Semi-Finals of the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship will be played on Thursday beginning with Canada vs. the United States, followed by Sweden vs. Russia.
