Barzal leads Canada past Switzerland 4-1

ZUG, Switzerland – Seattle Thunderbirds forward Mathew Barzal scored twice and added an assist to lead Canada to a 4-1 victory over host Switzerland in the World Under-18 Hockey Championships on Saturday.
Three of Canada’s four goals came on the man advantage, with Barzal opening the scoring at the four-minute mark of the first period with assists from Mitchell Stephens (Saginaw Spirit) and Thomas Chabot (Saint John Sea Dogs).
Barzal struck again 2:58 into the second period on an unassisted marker. Nicolas Roy (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) would give Canada a 3-0 lead at 9:59 before Dominik Diem scored Switzerland’s lone goal as Canada led 3-1 headed into the third.
Anthony Beauvillier (Shawinigan Cataractes) rounded out the scoring on the powerplay 30 seconds into the third with helpers from Stephens and Barzal as the man advantage went 3-for-8 on the game.
Goaltender Evan Cormier (Saginaw Spirit) turned aside 19 of the 20 shots he faced as Canada outshot Switzerland 29-20.
Canada returns to action against the Czech Republic on Sunday at 12:45pm ET. The game can be seen on TSN2.
