Canada opens WU18 with 11-6 win over Latvia

ZUG, Switzerland – Latvia proved to be a capable opponent in the early going, but Canada overcame a 3-2 deficit after one period to take an 11-6 victory in their opening game of the 2015 World Under-18 Hockey Championships in Zug, Switzerland.
It’s the first time Canada has scored 11 goals in the World Under-18 Hockey Championships since 2010.
Defenceman Jérémy Roy (Sherbrooke Phoenix) recorded a hat-trick, scoring in each period while forward Mitchell Stephens (Saginaw Spirit) also contributed with two goals and an assist.
Seattle Thunderbirds forward Mathew Barzal also had a three point outing, recording three assists while Nicolas Roy (Chicoutimi Sagueneens), Brett Howden (Moose Jaw Warriors), Jansen Harkins (Prince George Cougars), Kyle Capobianco (Sudbury Wolves), Guillaume Brisebois (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) and Ethan Bear (Seattle Thunderbirds) had other goals for Canada.
In all, 15 of Canada’s 17 skaters recorded at least one point.
Goaltender Zach Sawchenko (Moose Jaw Warriors) turned aside 16 shots in the victory.
Canada returns to action on Saturday against Switzerland at 12:45pm ET. The game can be seen live on TSN.
