First Period Flurry Keeps OHL Perfect Against Russia
Team OHL increased their nine-year winning streak to 18-0 over Team Russia with a 6-3 win in Game 4 of the 2011 SUBWAY Super Series Monday night in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
Boston Bruins prospect Ryan Spooner (Kingston Frontenacs) was named Player of the Game for Team OHL with a goal and two assists. The current OHL Player of the Week also recorded three points in Thursday’s win in Ottawa to give him six points in two games of the series.
The OHL scored six unanswered goals including five in the first period with three straight powerplay goals to take full control of the game.
Tanner Pearson (Barrie Colts) scored the first one at 3:59 with his second goal of the series, followed by Mitchell Heard (Plymouth Whalers) at 5:20, and Spooner at 5:47 forcing Russia to pull starting goalie Pavel Suchkov.
Leafs prospect Greg McKegg (Erie Otters), who also had a three-point night, scored the eventual game-winner at 10:47. Michael Sgarbossa (Sudbury Wolves) rounded out the scoring in the first period at 11:33.
Christian Thomas (Oshawa Generals) built the OHL lead to 6-0 early in the second period before Russia mounted a small comeback with three goals in the final 10 minutes of the middle frame.
JP Anderson (Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors) would make seven third period saves to shut the door and hold the win for Scott Wedgewood (Plymouth Whalers) who started between the pipes and stopped all 12 shots he faced.
Russian captain Daniil Apalkov was named Player of the Game with one goal.
Sergey Kostenko made 26 saves after relieving Suchkov who allowed three goals in seven shots.
The SUBWAY Super Series now shifts to the WHL with both the CHL and Russia winning two games each. The CHL holds a 7-5 lead in series points based on the standings that award three points for a regulation win, two points for a shootout win, and one point for a shootout loss.
