Sagueneens’ Christopher Gibson Named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Christopher Gibson of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 6 after posting a 2-0-0-0 record including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .964.
Gibson claims the award after two straight nominations, this time backstopping the Sags to a pair of road wins where he combined to make 81 saves in both starts beginning with a 40-save performance in a 4-3 win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix on Friday. On Sunday he made 41 saves and was named first star of a 1-0 win over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. The shutout was his third of the season and the 12th of his career which puts him just three behind the all-time QMJHL record holder Ryan Mior who recorded 15 shutouts with PEI and Gatineau between 2003-08.
Gibson is playing in his fourth QMJHL season with the Sagueneens. The 20-year-old Finnish native was selected in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. In 21 games so far this season, Gibson carries a 11-7-0-1 record with a 2.68 goals-against-average and a .916 save percentage.
Also considered for the award this week was Laurent Brossoit of the Edmonton Oil Kings who went 2-0-0-0 with a shutout and a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .971, and Plymouth Whalers rookie Alex Nedeljkovic who went 4-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 2.23 and save percentage of .934.
