Honourary Captains Announced for SUBWAY® Super Series Game in Windsor

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Ontario Hockey League, the Windsor Spitfires Hockey Club, and SUBWAY® today announced that Hockey Hall of Fame members Marcel Pronovost and Igor Larionov will serve as Honourary Captains for the SUBWAY® Super Series Game to be played in Windsor, ON, Monday November 23, 2009.

 

“The Windsor Spitfires are honoured to have Marcel Pronovost and Igor Larionov, both hockey legends and members of the Hockey Hall of Fame as Honourary Captains for the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series game here in Windsor” said Spitfires’ President and Head Coach Bob Boughner.  “Mr. Pronovost and Mr. Larionov’s hockey careers and accomplishments speak for themselves, and we look forward to welcoming them as they represent Team OHL and Team Russia respectively for this great event.”

 

Pronovost, a native of Lac la Tortue, Quebec, enjoyed a storied hockey career as a defenceman participating in over 1200 NHL games in 20 seasons and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.  He was a four-time all-star and part of five Stanley Cup championship teams including four as a member of the Detroit Red Wings in 1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955, before joining the Toronto Maple Leafs competing as part of the franchise’s last cup winning team in 1967.  Following his playing days, Pronovost coached for 13 seasons including two behind the bench as Head Coach of the Buffalo Sabres from 1977-79 and as an assistant with the Red Wings from 1980-82.  Pronovost was a member of the Windsor Spitfires for two seasons as a player from 1947-49 and he returned as the team’s Head Coach for the 1982-83 season.  The team honoured his number four jersey in 2005.  He currently works as a scout, entering his 20th season with the New Jersey Devils winning three Stanley Cup Championships in 1995, 2000, and 2003.

 

Larionov, a cerebral centre nicknamed “The Professor”, was considered one of top hockey players in the world competing in Russia before joining the NHL in 1989 at the age of 29.  He played 11 seasons in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, and New Jersey Devils, participating in over 900 games and amassing 169 goals and 475 assists for 644 points.  Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008, Larionov won three Stanley Cup Championships as a member of the Red Wings in 1997, 1998, and 2002.  A native of Voskresensk, the Russian hockey icon helped lead the Russian National team to the 1981 Canada Cup Championship also winning Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988, along with several World Championship titles for his native country. 

 

The SUBWAY® Super Series is an integral part of the identification process for Canada’s National Junior Team final selection camp as regional teams of CHL All-Stars compete against the Russian National Junior Team. 

 

The 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series is supported by CHL associate sponsors, Bank of Montreal, NeilMed, and CCM, and will be broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet with the two QMJHL games on RDS.
