Canada’s quest for a sixth straight gold medal is headed for the championship game at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Saskatoon, SK.
Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires scored a pair of goals to help Canada cruise to a 6-1 win over Switzerland in the semi-finals on Sunday. They are waiting for the winner of Sunday’s other semi-final between the U.S.A. and Sweden to find out who their opponent will be in the championship game on Tuesday (8:00 p.m. Eastern on TSN and RDS).
Canada scored early on Sunday when Jordan Eberle of the Regina Pats picked up a pass at the side of the net and fired it past Swiss goaltender Benjamin Conz for a powerplay marker. It was Eberle’s fifth goal of the tournament and 12th career goal at the World Junior Championships. He trails John Tavares for the all-time Canadian lead of 13.
Canada started to break the game open in the second period when Marco Scandella of the Val d-Or Foreurs and Hall tallied a minute and a half apart to push Canada’s lead to three.
Switzerland got on the board midway through the second period on a goal by Mauro Jorg.
Brayden Schenn of the Brandon Wheat Kings lifted a backhander into the top of the net to restore Canada’s three-goal lead. Hall and Stefan Della Rovere of the Barrie Colts also scored in the third period to run Canada’s record to a perfect 5-0-0 in the tournament.
Brandon McMillan of the Kelowna Rockets had a pair of assists and Jake Allen of the Montreal Juniors turned aside 20 shots in the win.
